Help me understand the directions..?

I think the 40 words are meant to be puzzle pieces. Since they have no shape you should use enough detail and information when putting them together. The arrangement may not necessarily be a straight line, because some may be occurring at the same time as the others, and one possibly has an impact on the others. You might want to extend your research beyond your book to have a clearer "picture". Good luck!
