What is the relationship between competition and niches?

A niche is a term that involves many aspects of an organisms life, including what they eat, when they eat it, where they live, etc. So, as an example, if two birds live on the same tree and eat the same fruit from that tree, but they do so at different times of the day, these two species have different niches. Same thing happens if they eat the same fruit, at the same time, but from different trees, etc etc. So basically, in order to avoid competition, different species develop different niches. If two species were to have the same niche, they would most likely have to compete for such resources.
